Papers : of John Spotswood Skyrin, 1760-1855.

The collection includes military commissions, estate papers, receipts, accounts and correspondence of Skyrin and members of the Temple family. Also included are two items relating to Henry Skyring (father of John S. Skyrin): an ecclesiastical commission dated 1760 and a letter from John Norton, dated 6 February 1765. Correspondents include Skyrin's sister, Elizabeth Temple, and Thomas Carter of Shirley plantation. Includes letters and accounts regarding the sale of wheat, tobacco, cotton and other crops to Wortham McGruder and Company, including crops of Thomas Carter. There are also receipts and accounts of John Skyrin and William Henry Temple of Chesterfield County; and the estate papers of John King of King William County, of which John Skyrin was trustee.

The identity of the author, John King, is uncertain. From the contents of the letter he is thought to be the second Baron of Ockham, Surrey (d. 1740). Lord King was the second of four children born to Peter King (1669-1734), the first Baron of Ockham and Lord Chancellor of England from 1725 to 1733.
